Developmental Concerns

About developmental concerns

Development in childhood follows broad patterns, but every child moves through milestones at their own pace. When a child is not reaching developmental milestones, or when their behaviour or communication seems significantly different from their peers, it can be difficult to know whether to act and where to start.

Early identification and support can make a meaningful difference. Level Up Psychology works with children and families to understand what is happening, provide appropriate assessment, and connect families with the right supports.

Developmental concerns can include

  • Speech and language delays: Limited vocabulary, difficulty forming sentences, or challenges being understood.
  • Social development: Difficulty connecting with peers, limited interest in others, or challenges reading social cues.
  • Motor development: Delays in gross or fine motor skills affecting movement, coordination, or handwriting.
  • Behavioural differences: Significant tantrums, rigidity, difficulty with transitions, or behaviour that is hard to understand or manage.
  • Emotional development: Difficulty identifying or managing emotions appropriate to developmental stage.
  • Possible autism or ADHD: Signs that may indicate a neurodevelopmental condition that has not yet been identified.

Our approach

We take time to understand the child in the context of their family, environment, and history before drawing conclusions. Where assessment is indicated, we conduct thorough evaluations and provide clear, actionable reports. We work closely with families, early childhood educators, and other health professionals throughout the process.

When to seek support

  • Your child is not reaching developmental milestones and you are not sure whether to be concerned.
  • Teachers or carers have raised concerns about your child's development or behaviour.
  • You have noticed differences that have been difficult to get answers about.
  • You want assessment to clarify whether a diagnosis is appropriate and what supports would help.

How we help

  • Developmental and neurodevelopmental assessment for young children.
  • Parent consultation and guidance on supporting your child at home.
  • Collaboration with schools, early childhood services, and other health providers.
  • Connection to appropriate community supports and services.
